Mary petooloosie
CO-TRANSLATOR / ASSISTANT DIRECTOR (DEVELOPMENT)
Mary Petooloosie, (Iqaluk) born and raised in Iqaluit, is originally a Cape Dorset bad ass, having lived her formative years learning her traditional ways of her people; Inuit, from her father’s side.
Her true artistry comes from her love as a professional baker and cook, where “It cooks itself. I just watch it. It is simple science.”
Mary, also known as “Meow Meow”, based on a miscommunication, has worked with Inuit Broadcasting Corporation. In short order, Meow rose from technical producer to production assistant for the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation, which dates back to late the 1970s. It was the first ever Inuit production company with complete programming in the Inuktitut language, who offered her a home.
Mary oversaw shows such as Qanurlli, Takuginai and Qaujisaut.
She, with a very distinctive voice, described as “manly”, has done voice overs for Kipiingujautit – a program for Inuit elders, as well as many others.
Mary has changed the science from baking to television, to theatre. The science never ends.
