Building on our existing professional development series, this May we’re excited to offer the Volcano Conservatory: Digital Skills Edition. This series of workshops is targeted at theatre artists who are looking to expand their horizons and gain some practical, beginner-level training in basic audio production, video editing and livestreaming.

We’ll also be offering two panel discussions on the impact of the pandemic on theatrical practice: Stage Managing Digital & Hybrid Projects will kick off the Conservatory on May 21, while The Possibilities of Performance in Physical Distance will end our programming on May 29.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Volcano Conservatory - Digital Skills Edition will be offered online via Zoom and is FREE to all participants. We also partnering with Spiderwebshow to offer a limited amount of subsidized tickets to Livestream 101.

SELF-ENGINEERING YOUR OWN VOICEOVERS
Basic Audio Production with Deanna H. Choi
May 21st | 2PM-4PM EDT

Are you a performer struggling to record audio on your own at home? In this workshop, Deanna H. Choi will walk you through the basics of self-engineering your own voiceovers, from effectively setting up the room you’re working in to recording yourself and editing your own takes.

To get the most out this session, you’ll want to:
1) Download Audacity, a free, easy-to-use multi-track audio editor and recorder for Windows and macOS.
2) Bring a short piece of text (2-3 sentences) you are familiar with that you will be recording as practice during the session.
3) If you have a USB microphone at home, you’ll want to have that on hand as well.

LIVESTREAM 101
with Vijay Mathew

Co-Presented by Spiderwebshow and Volcano Theatre 

The basics of livestreaming performance: equipment, software and planning. HowlRound co-founder and Cultural Strategist Vijay Mathew will cover the starting points, and how to livestream from home. The workshop goals are to demystify the difficulty of livestreaming and to help you to understand the benefits of livestreaming for the arts field and your work. You will come away with an understanding of what you need to produce a high-quality livestream: both in-person and in the context of physical distancing. 

Livestream 101 is great for beginners, and will require the use of a Google Chrome web browser.

Volcano’s subsidized tickets for Livestream 101 are currently SOLD OUT. Tickets for this workshop can be purchased on a sliding scale ($5-$50) here.

MASTERING iMOVIE
Basic Video Editing with Samay Arcentales Cajas
May 26th | 2PM-4PM EDT

This workshop will provide the tools to master iMovie, showing you the skills you need create your own video and film content. In this workshop, Samay Arcentales Cajas will provide an overview of the entire editing process from start to finish, from file management to final video exports, including addressing sound and colour. Useful shortcuts and tips will be provided to help work through your editing projects more seamlessly!

DAVINCI AS A TOOL FOR EXPRESSION
Basic Video Editing with Lyon Smith
May 27th | 2PM-4PM EDT

Anxious to get creating but intimidated by the prospect of working in a new medium? In this session, Lyon Smith seeks to democratize digital skills by introducing you to free, accessible video editing software that will give you the tools you need to start making whatever it is you want to make.

DaVinci is compatible with Windows, macOS, GNU/Linux and other operating systems. To get the most of this workshop, download the free version here.

STAGE MANAGING DIGITAL & HYBRID PROJECTS
May 21 | 7PM-8:30PM EDT

Join Kat Chin, Neha Ross and Dustyn Wales as Ada Aguilar moderates a conversation about how stage management practice has adapted to support a live performance sector that has largely moved online. You’ll learn more about the challenges of rehearsing over Zoom, calling shows via livestream, and stage managing filmed works in the context of COVID-19. Bring your questions for a Q&A session following the discussion!

THE POSSIBILITIES OF PERFORMANCE IN PHYSICAL DISTANCE

May 29 | 7PM-8:30PM EDT

The Possibilities of Performance in Physical Distance is a panel on how live performance artists are contending with the moment we're in through their works. Join Alex Bulmer, Lisa Karen Cox, Leslie Ting and Adrienne Wong as Nikki Shaffeeullah moderates a powerful discussion on how to unlock the potential of digital works during these times. 

ASL Interpretation will be provided for this panel discussion.
