Aria Umezawa - Opera Consultant

Aria Umezawa is a stage director, producer, and facilitator known for challenging the status quo in opera. She co-founded Amplified Opera, an independent, equity-seeking opera company and the first-ever Disruptor-in-Residence at the Canadian Opera Company. 

Her recent directing engagements include L’incoronazione di Poppea (L’Atelier Lyrique, Opéra de Montréal),  Toshio Hosokawa’s The Raven (Opera Philadelphia), Madame Butterfly (New Orleans Opera), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Vancouver Opera),  and Teiya Kasahara’s The Queen In Me (co-directed with Andrea Donaldson, co-presented with Amplified Opera, Canadian Opera Company, Nightwood Theatre and Theatre Gargantua).

 As a consultant, Aria has advised on several projects including Nîpîy’s Songwalks (Amadeus Choir of Greater Toronto), and the 2019 co-production of Madama Butterfly produced by Opera in the Heights and Pacific Opera Projects.
